This region was declared a Cultural World Heritage in 1995 for its large number of underground tombs, the so called hypogea, and well remained monumental statues of human figures. It is not the high concentration of underground tombs which makes this region special, but rather its historical heritage. Here is located the National Archeological Park of Tierradentro where people can explore the hypogea close to "Alto de Segovia" and "Alto del Duende" which are a unique testimony to a pre-Hispanic society in the northern Andean in the period of 500-900 AD. Tierradentro shows the cultural wealth and everyday life of this long gone society. The 12m wide burial chambers represent their funerary rituals, social and political structure of this culture.
